Notes on network security, homelab builds and self-hosting, by Joe Gilmore.

The Firewall Frontier is my blog: notes on network security, homelab builds and self-hosting, written down so I stop relearning them.

I'm Joe Gilmore, a Network Security Engineer with Washington State University ITS, on the NODE team (Network Operations Design & Engineering). At work that means firewall policy, segmentation, remote access and the change process around them. At home it means a lab built on Proxmox, TrueNAS, Docker, pfSense and Tailscale, with Home Assistant and a set of self-hosted services on top.

What you'll find here

  • Network security practice: policy design, segmentation, and changes that don't cause outages
  • Homelab builds, including the ones that took more than one attempt
  • Self-hosting: what's worth running yourself and what it takes to run it properly

Posts here are my own and don't describe my employer's environment or speak for WSU.
